Instructions for Authors |
INSTRUCTIONS TO AUTHORS Editorial Policy The Journal of Women’s Cancer publishes Original Articles, Brief Reports, Reviews, Editorials, Letters to the Editors, and Book Reviews. Original Articles and Brief reports describe new findings of particular significance in areas related to all types of cancer affecting women. Reviews are by invitation from the Editors in Chief. Review Procedure All articles submitted for publication to the Journal of Women’s Cancer are rigorously reviewed by members of the Editorial Board. A rapid review process of the manuscripts assures that findings of high scientific and medical interest can be published with minimum delay.
Original Articles describe new findings of major importance. An Article should contain no more than 6,000 words, excluding the abstract, literature cited, tables, footnotes, and figure legends. Brief Reports describe significant findings not requiring an extensive format or an abstract. A Brief Report should contain 1,500 words or less, excluding the literature cited, tables, footnotes, and figure legends. Reviews describe relevant areas of research in cancers affecting women in a comprehensive fashion, and are generally invited by the Editors in Chief. Authors should make the contents of reviews comprehensible to knowledgeable readers outside the particular subject area. Unsolicited submissions will be considered upon consultation with the Editors in Chief. A Review should contain 10,000 words or less, excluding the abstract, literature cited, tables, footnotes, and figure legends. Editorials are in general invited by the Editors in Chief. Unsolicited submissions will be considered on an individual basis. They have the objective of discussing the significance of a paper in the same issue of the journal, a significant topic of public and/or scientific interest, or opinions on any subject relevant to the journal's interests. Editorials usually contain about 650 words. Letters to the Editors commenting on material previously published in the journal are welcome. In such cases the name of the author(s), title of the specific article, and the volume and number of the journal in which it appeared should be clearly identified. The author(s) will receive a copy of the letter and their comments will be published jointly with the submitted Letter to the Editors. Correspondence expressing opinions or views on relevant issues pertaining to cancer in women will also be published as a letter. Letters to the Editors should contain no more than 500 words and a limited number of references. Book Reviews are solicited by the Editors in Chief. They contain no more than 300 words. Specific instructions for submission of manuscripts to the Journal of Women’s Cancer Submission of invited review articles, original articles, brief reports, letters to the editors, editorials, book reviews, and revised manuscripts must be addressed to either:
The manuscript’s text, figure legends, and references must be typed double-spaced. Tables may be single- or double-spaced. The columns and lines must be sufficiently spaced and the type large enough to be easily read. Send an original and three copies of the complete manuscript and four clear sets of all illustrations. Photocopies of photographs, blots, gels, or similar material, or figures with poor contrast will not be accepted for publication. Title Page The title of the manuscript should be brief but informative (up to 14 words or 100 characters). The title page should contain the full name and title of all authors, along with the affiliations, complete address, telephone number, fax number, and e-mail address, of the corresponding author for the manuscript. Running Title A running title of no more than 50 characters should be provided in the title page. Key Words Five key words that best describe the nature of the manuscript should be listed on the title page for indexing purposes. Abbreviations and Symbols It is desirable that the use of abbreviations and symbols be reduced to those that are indispensable and standard. When abbreviations are used, they should be clearly spelled out the first time that they are used. Additionally, they should be listed on a separate page before the abstract. Abstract Abstracts are required for original articles, brief reports, and reviews. The abstract should contain a concise summary of the full content of the manuscript clearly stating all important findings and conclusions of the study. It must not exceed 350 words. Body of the Manuscript The body of the manuscript, consisting of Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results, and Discussion sections should be typed double-spaced. All sections should be written in standard grammatical English using American spelling. Pages should be numbered consecutively at the bottom of the page. References, tables, and figures should be numbered in the order in which they are cited in the text. If references are cited in tables, they should be numbered continuing the sequence of numbers existing at the point where the table is first mentioned in the text. Introduction A brief background of the subject, citation of pertinent literature, and a concise rationale for the performance of the work should suffice for introducing the reader to the subject under study. Materials and Methods The description of the methods used must be concise, but with sufficient detail to allow replication of the study by a qualified investigator. There should be exact correspondence between the methodology described and the endpoints presented in results. Materials used should be identified by full name(s). Sources of reagents, and complete names and locations of suppliers should also be included for less common or new reagents or biological specimens. Full names, standard abbreviations of labeled compounds and isotopes used for labeling, concentrations of solutions, and reaction conditions should be specified as well. Statistical analyses performed should be described in detail and appropriately referenced. Results Results will be published as a separate section in original articles, but will be combined with the discussion in brief reports. A concise description of findings following the same sequence of experimentation described in materials and methods is recommended. Discussion The discussion should contain a focused analysis of the reported findings in light of current and pertinent bibliography. Literature Cited The literature should be numbered in Arabic numerals in the order it is cited in the text. The number should appear in parentheses beginning in the introduction. References cited in tables and legends of figures should follow the order of citation in the text. The literature cited should be typed double-spaced starting on a new page. References to articles published in a journal or periodical should follow the abbreviation style of Index Medicus. The list should include the name and initials of all authors separated by commas, except the last author’s initials, which will be followed by a period, the title of the article followed by a period, abbreviated name of the journal, volume, first and last page numbers, and year of publication, ending in a period. If the specific issue is still in press, page numbers can be substituted by the term (In Press). Example journal article:
Book Chapter For a book chapter or section, give the last name and initials of all authors separated by commas, except the last author’s initials, which will be followed by a period; the title of the specific section or chapter ending in a period; the book title and volume; if applicable, the editor(s) last name and initials in parentheses; the name of the publishing company, location, year of publication, and first and last page numbers of the section or chapter cited. When the author is the editor of the book, give the author(s) last name and initials, title of the specific section or chapter, book title, name of publishing company, location, year of publication, and page number of book. Example Chapter in a Book
Author as Editor in a Book
Citation of papers in preparation or submitted for publication, unpublished observations, and personal communications should not be numbered in the sequence of literature cited. In those cases, the name of the first investigator followed by "et al." should be included parenthetically in the text. Citation of papers still in press, in preparation, or submitted for publication, unpublished data, and personal communications requires that permission is obtained in writing from one of the authors of such document. Tables Tables in a manuscript should clarify rather than duplicate data presented in results. Complex or excessively large tables should be avoided. Columns and lines must be sufficiently spaced and the type large enough to be easily read. Every table must be sequentially numbered using Arabic numerals, and have a descriptive title. An appropriate heading must identify each one of the columns. Units of measure, statistical significance of data, and abbreviations must be clearly defined in the table or explained in a footnote. Figures All figures must be sequentially numbered in Arabic numerals. The term "Figure" applies to all illustrations, including photographs and photomicrographs in color or black and white, graphs, charts, diagrams, electrophoretic patterns, etc. Their number in a manuscript must be limited to demonstrate essential information. Four sets of all illustrations must be provided. Each set of illustrations must be clear and appropriate for scientific review. Illustrations must be reproducible and acceptable as camera-ready for publication. When submitting hand-drawn artwork, send four originals of the artwork or one original and three clear photographs. Artwork should be drawn or printed in black ink for good reproduction. Color illustrations and photographs will be accepted, but expenses for their reproduction will be charged to the authors. Black and white photocopies of color originals, and photocopies of photographs, photomicrographs, gels, blots, or similar material do not reproduce well and will not be accepted for publication. Negatives will not be acceptable for publication. Illustrations must not be stapled to the manuscript. Figure legends must be typed double-spaced on a separate sheet. Lettering or symbols in the figure must be identified in each legend. The number and the indication of the "Top" of the figure must be written on the back of each figure either with a light pen, or on a self-adhesive label that does not transfer to the front. In those figures containing several panels each panel must be sequentially identified with a letter and its specific content described in the figure legend. Cover Letter Every manuscript submitted must be accompanied by a cover letter signed by the corresponding author. This letter should clearly state that the manuscript submitted for publication in the Journal of Women’s Cancer has not been previously published and has not been and will not be submitted or published elsewhere while acceptance by this journal is under consideration. It should also state that all authors of the research paper have directly participated in the planning, execution, or analysis of the study, and that all authors have read and approved the final version submitted. The cover letter must be accompanied by written permission, when appropriate, of those authors named in the acknowledgements who have been credited with significant scientific contributions to the work. Written permission should also be obtained from at least one author of each work cited as a personal communication, unpublished data, or manuscript in preparation or submitted for publication. Copyright Authors submitting invited or unsolicited manuscripts for publication in the Journal of Women’s Cancer are required to transfer copyright to the League of Women Against Cancer (LOWAC Corp.). The responsibility of transferring the copyright for those manuscripts written by multiple authors will be that of the corresponding author, also considered the "senior author." The necessary forms will be sent to the corresponding author when the manuscript is accepted for publication. All material published in the Journal of Women’s Cancer is copyrighted to LOWAC, Corp. Therefore, permission must be obtained for either complete or partial reproduction of any articles. Human Subjects Manuscripts reporting studies involving human subjects must include an assurance that the adequate written informed consent was obtained from each subject involved in the study. Such manuscripts must also include a statement that approval by an institutional board has been obtained. Animal Welfare Manuscripts reporting studies involving animals must state that the experimental design and animal care were in accord with institutional guidelines.
